Old World Vs New World

"Old World" refers to a production philosophy as much as it does a geographical region: the winemaking process is more closely linked to the traditional processes of the region. Old World regions include France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Portugal, amongst others. These wines tend to be subtler and more layered than New World wines, and increase in complexity with age.

 

New World wines represent a greater acceptance of technology and new developments in winemaking – as a consequence, there is a greater variety of styles. That said, the trend tends towards fruit-forward, bold profiles. Major New World regions include Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Chile, the United States, and Argentina.

Winemaking

The Old World style of wine mostly revolves around the terrior, which refers to the layout of the land and the type of soil and climate in which a vine is grown. The style aims to embody a sense of the region in each different type of wine produced. The traits of each region are generally expressed through the mineral tones found in the aroma and flavour of each wine. Old World wines are often more subtle and have more complex, hidden flavours that are revealed with time.

 

The New World wine production takes on a slightly different approach. It focuses more on “fruit driven” wines which aim to bring out stronger fruit flavours in each wine. The wine makers of the New World are not afraid to experiment and make use of technology and science to bring out the best in each wine they make. Wine of the New World are also known by their association to the winemaker which is in contrast to the Old World style of wine making which puts emphasis on the wines and not the maker. This has changed during recent times and many French winemakers are now well-known for producing wines at a specific Château, or winery, and putting their names on the label. New World wines are found to be bold, fruity and somewhat “in your face” when compared to Old World wines.

Viticulture and Viniculture

Viticulture refers to everything you need to know about grapes. It incorporates the study of grapes so as to understand the science and correct methods of growing specific grape types. It includes knowing when to plant vines and in which soil type a specific type of grape will flourish. It has been around for centuries and many of the great wine produced today come from vines that are over 100 years old.

 

Viniculture is far more exciting as it is viticulture that is taken to the next level and is the study of grapes used for making wines. A Viniculturist needs to know everything from how to successfully grow each type of grape to how to turn that grape into a great wine. It is a complicated process and involves much studying and practice.
